Postdoctoral research associate in forest ecosystem dynamics modeling
The Earth Systems Research Center, University of New Hampshire (UNH), has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary research team consisting of a global ecologist (Dr. Jingfeng Xiao, UNH), a forest hydrologist (Dr. Ge Sun, USDA Forest Service), a forest ecologist/climate scientist (Dr. Steve McNulty, USDA Forest Service), and a biological scientist and a DGVM modeler (Dr. John Kim, USDA Forest Service). The postdoc will be employed via UNH and be physically based at the Research Triangle Park in Durham, NC where the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center and USDA Southeast Climate Hub, a facility of the Southern Research Station, USDA Forest Service, are located.
This successful candidate will evaluate and improve a dynamic global vegetation model - MC2 and simulate forest vegetation dynamics, carbon uptake, water yield, and other ecosystem services in response to future climate change and disturbances (e.g., fire, drought, insect outbreaks) in the eastern U.S. This position is funded by USDA Forest Service and can be renewed annually depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
A Ph.D. in areas such as forestry/natural resources, ecology, ecohydrology, remote sensing, atmospheric sciences/meteorology, biogeosciences, environmental science, or a related field is required. Applicants should be enthusiastic, creative, and highly motivated. Ideal candidates should have one or more of the following experiences: dynamic global vegetation modeling (or ecosystem modeling/Earth system modeling), satellite remote sensing, processing of large data sets, machine learning, and synthesis of in-situ observations. Strong communication, writing, and programming skills and publication record are highly desirable.
Please submit a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information of three references to Drs. Jingfeng Xiao, Ge Sun, and Steve McNulty via email with the subject line “Application for postdoc position in forest ecosystem dynamics modeling”. Review of applications will begin on July 7, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
The position offers a competitive salary and full benefits. The Earth Systems Research Center (UNH) is a world-class research center in Earth system science. UNH is a Research-I, Land, Sea and Space Grant University that has been recognized both nationally and internationally for research excellence in ecology, environmental science, geoscience and forestry. The Southern Research Station (USDA Forest Service) is part of the Nation's largest forestry research organization—USDA Forest Service Research and Development—the leading organization for research on natural resource management and sustainability in the United States.
