STSM – Does climate change violate children’s rights? Science communication for litigation and advocacy with Save the Children
In October 2023, I had the wonderful opportunity to carry out a 1-month research visit to the NGO Save the Children Norway (Redd Barna), in Oslo. This research visit allowed me to learn how the international NGO is working on children’s rights in relation to climate change, and to support their research and science communication activities.

From 6–8 September 2023, researchers, activists, and policymakers gathered at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) for the Bridging Climate and Impact Attribution Workshop 2023. The workshop explored innovative methods and practical applications of attribution studies, fostering collaboration and bridging gaps between science and actionable policy.

This October, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) through the EU COST Action and COST Action CA19139 PROCLIAS. The destination of my mission? The prestigious Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Potsdam, Germany.

STSM at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: Advancing Storm Surge Modeling with Deep Learning
I had the opportunity to spend several weeks at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, collaborating with experts from the Water and Climate Risks group. I also connected with researchers from the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at Utrecht University and Deltares in Delft. My focus during the STSM was developing a probabilistic deep learning model to improve storm surge projections in the context of climate change.

Dr. Ritika Srinet, a postdoctoral researcher from Forest Modelling Group at University of Helsinki, Finland spent 2 weeks with Forest and Ecosystem Resilience Group at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) to develop a framework for country-scale modelling of climate impacts on forests using PREBAS model in Finland following the ISIMIP protocols

Seppe Lampe, a PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel spent 2 weeks at ETH Zurich working on a new machine learning-based fire model.

MSc Athanasios Tsilimigkras from the Technical University of Crete (TUC) visited the Hydrology Research Group at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) for 24 days, working on advancing hydrological assessments with JULES, contributing to the WMO Global Water Resources Report.
Shaping the Future of Forests: Forest Modellers Unite in Potsdam
The TG2.5 Workshop on Country-Scale Forest Modelling was held from September 24-25, 2024, at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).,This hybrid event brought together forest modellers from across Europe to discuss and establish protocols for country-scale forest model simulations as part of the PROCLIAS TG2.5 initiative.
Paper Writing and Synthesis Workshop for PROCLIAS Working Group (WG) 4
From September 12th to 13th, 2024, 20 participants gathered at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. The workshop brought together individuals committed to advancing scientific research on climate impact attribution and climate policy actions. The primary goal was twofold: to reflect on the progress made over the past few years under the PROCLIAS initiative and to initiate a collaborative effort to draft a perspective or commentary on “Translating Scientific Climate Impact (Attribution) Data into Policy Actions at Different Scales.”

Interdisciplinary Summer School on Forest Ecosystems: A Fusion of Technology, Models, and Nature in Warsaw
The "Interdisciplinary Summer School on Forest Ecosystems," held from August 26th to 30th, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland, brought together 37 participants from 18 countries to explore the use of remote sensing technology in forest ecosystem modeling. Organized by 3DForEcoTech and PROCLIAS, the event offered a blend of theoretical learning, hands-on experience, and collaborative research projects, showcasing the potential of remote sensing data in advancing forest studies. The week concluded with presentations and cultural activities, fostering both scientific innovation and international collaboration.
The Inspiring Journey of the Water Quality Workshop: 13-14 June 2024
From the lively exchanges of ideas to exploring new collaborative horizons, the ISIMIP Water Quality Workshop held on June 13-14, 2024, in Wageningen, Netherlands, was a definite success. Bringing together a diverse group of experts from more than 10 countries, both in person and virtually, the workshop fostered high-level discussions and productive sessions focused on advancing water quality sectorial activities.
ISIMIP-PROCLIAS workshop 2024 was a great success!
The ISIMIP-PROCLIAS workshop, held from 22 - 26 April 2024, at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), gathered around 120 on-site and 150 online participants to discuss the future of climate impact research. As the IPCC Assessment Report 7 (AR7) cycle progresses, the workshop emphasized aligning research timelines and data production with IPCC schedules. High-level keynotes and strategic discussions focused on developing new climate impact projections and attribution studies. The event also featured sector-specific meetings and marked the final main meeting of the COST Action PROCLIAS collaboration with ISIMIP.
Translating climate science for international law: Second multidisciplinary workshop in Copenhagen
After kicking off their collaboration in Amsterdam in June 2023, a multidisciplinary group of scholars working in the fields of Climate Science and International Law got together in Copenhagen on 23 and 24 May 2024 to continue their discussions on the interface between Climate Science and International Law. The insights gained during discussions will be incorporated in the 5 paper projects, which the group aims to conclude by 2025.

Virtual Mobility grant for developing Land-use data for ISIMIP3b
The main objective under this Virtual Mobility Grant was to conduct the model runs for delivery of future projections of land use patterns on a gridded spatial scale as a data product for the ISIMIP3b. The second objective was to support the coordination process with other land use models that are invited to participate and also produce gridded land use patterns under the common scenario protocol. The third objective was to work on further documenting of the common protocol of land use patterns generation and on preparing the publication of the resulting data output.
PROCLIAS WG 4 Paper Writing Workshop: Best practices on addressing typical climate impact stakeholders
From the 12th to 13th of October 2023, 22 participants convened at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels. This workshop, comprised of individuals keen on stakeholder engagement and climate impact attribution assessments, aimed to foster community collaboration. The goal was to document a framework for the proactive engagement of stakeholders in climate impact attribution assessments.
STSM at Helmholtz-Centre for environmental research (UFZ)
Dr. Andreia Ribeiro, a postdoctoral researcher from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, joined Jakob Zscheischler (UFZ) and Doug Richardson (UNSW) for 6 days in late August 2023, at UFZ in Leipzig, Germany, to collaborate on topics related with large ensemble modelling of fire activity. This STSM coincided with Doug Richardson's visit to UFZ, facilitating the collaborative environment and exchange of expertise.

This summer school is designed for PhD candidates and postdocs from a variety of research fields focusing on forest ecosystems. During the summer school, a poster session was organized on the participants’ current research interests, and the work stimulated open exchange and discussion between students and trainers.
PROCLIAS TG1.2 Hackathon in Utrecht
From September 12-14th (2023) in total 13 participants (2 of them online) from Greece, Germany and The Netherlands met at Utrecht University to exchange ideas and work towards a software tool to analyze ISIMIP model output. This tool can perform the analysis automatically after data submission, but can also be applied by the modelling teams and other ISIMIP data users e.g. for academic education. We started with the global water sector as proof-of-concept and to build experiences to facilitate future extension of the tool to other ISIMIP sectors.
Inspiring ISMIP/ PROCLIAS water quality workshop
An enthusiastic group of water quality modellers met to discuss the water quality protocol. It was a hybrid workshop of inspiring two half days with many interactions and discussions. Many people came to Wageningen and some joined online on 28-29 August 2023.
