STSM at Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS) at ETH-Zurich

Seppe Lampe, a PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel spent 2 weeks at ETH Zurich working on a new machine learning-based fire model.

The goal of this STSM was to further develop our machine learning-based fire model. During this stay, we had frequent discussions with Dr. Lukas Gudmundsson and Dr. Basil Kraft on the practical implementation of this LSTM model. We managed to solve a number of issues and got promising first results. The expertise of the D-USYS group is invaluable for our project. We are now meeting on a fixed monthly basis online (with extra possible meetings in-between as well) to further discuss the development of our model. During my research stay, D-USYS also held a small teambuilding on one of the evenings, where we had to find our way through a corn ma(i)ze. Over the weekend, my Belgian heart could not be happier as I could watch the World Championship cycling live from the Zurichbergstrasse. This research stay gave a big boost to the progress of our project, I hope to visit again soon!
