Paper Writing and Synthesis Workshop for PROCLIAS Working Group (WG) 4

From September 12th to 13th, 2024, 20 participants gathered at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. The workshop brought together individuals committed to advancing scientific research on climate impact attribution and climate policy actions. The primary goal was twofold: to reflect on the progress made over the past few years under the PROCLIAS initiative and to initiate a collaborative effort to draft a perspective or commentary on “Translating Scientific Climate Impact (Attribution) Data into Policy Actions at Different Scales.”

Day 1:

The workshop began with several participants presenting their experiences with climate science policy frameworks. These presentations covered topics such as climate policy adaptation and tipping points, addressing local needs through science-based policy pathways, Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways (DAPP), and the interplay between climate change and air pollution to inform policy. These discussions laid the foundation for the main goal of the workshop: defining the purpose of the perspective paper, tentatively titled, "Translating Scientific Climate Impact Attribution Data into Actionable Policies". The rationale behind this initiative was also explored. The day concluded with a consensus on the paper's structure and a recognition of the need to streamline policies within the broader context of climate science.

Day 2:

The second day opened with more participants sharing their experiences in stakeholder engagement from projects such as AG-WaMED and DOWN2EARTH. This was followed by collaborative submissions for the community paper, with various online contributions and edits made across different sections. Later in the day, we reviewed the achievements of Working Group 4 and brainstormed future collaboration opportunities beyond the PROCLIAS initiative. The workshop concluded with final remarks and an outline of next steps for the community paper, with a concrete draft anticipated by March 2025.

Our deepest gratitude goes to all speakers and participants for their invaluable contributions. Special thanks to the COST Action CA19139 PROCLIAS for their support, which was instrumental in making this workshop a success. We look forward to the follow-up activities in the coming weeks.
