PROCLIAS-ISIMIP water quality workshop

Finally, a new water quality sector is in the plan for the Intersectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP). Following this new effort, several activities were organized within the framework of the COST Action PROCLIAS. Between the 30th and 31st of August roughly 50 participants (40 on-site and around 10 online), met at the Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.

The session took place over two half days. On the first day, attendees listened to a fascinating keynote address by Oxford University professor Paul Whitehead on "Modeling water quality in big river systems: implications of climate and environmental change." This lecture served as an ideal icebreaker for the subsequent session on model varieties in large-scale water quality modelling, which was provided by Michelle van Vliet, Maryna Strokal and others. The first day concluded with a presentation by the World Water Quality Assessment (WWQA) outlining future goals.

On the second day, the first draft of the water quality protocol was introduced and followed by interactive sessions with inspiring discussions. Several issues relating to large-scale water quality modelling were discussed on this engaging day. We discussed the opportunity to join the efforts between the WWQA and ISIMIP / PROCLIAS initiatives. The debate focused on the most recent climate data, temporal and spatial scales, different inputs, different outputs, and the possibility of harmonization (see the pictures below and the result of mentimeter). A lot of enthusiasm is to continue these discussions, and strengthening ongoing collaborations in this field.

We sincerely thank all of the speakers and participants for their efforts, without which this workshop would not have been such a great success. We are looking for follow-up activities in the near future.
