WG 3: Common datasets and protocols for climate impact modelling

WG3 brings together scientists with a keen interest in developing cross-sectoral climate impact modelling.

Lead: Simon Gosling, Shiri-Zemah Shamir, Louis-Francois Pau

The focus of WG 3 is to support the development of ideas and methods to conduct and analyse cross-sectoral, multi-model climate impact assessments. In connection with WG 1-4, WG 3 will build up a scientific community of climate impact modellers that transcends disciplinary and sectoral boundaries. WG 3 will be responsible for the coordination of the production of cross-sectoral climate impact simulations. It will do so by first identifying a set of intrinsically cross-sectoral issues that need further attention from the impact modelling community.

Examples include the polluting effects of agricultural nutrient runoff on coastal fisheries and biodiversity that requires agricultural models to provide nutrient runoff to hydrological models which can route the nutrients to the coast where they impact fishery models. Likewise, energy modellers and experts from utility companies could team up with heat stress modellers and public health specialists working on climate-related heat mortality or labour productivity effects to explore options to

i) improve data availability on air conditioning in Europe and

ii) conversely provide information on increased air conditioning demand.

Overall, WG 3 will help identifying methods and simulation settings that are rigid enough for thorough scientific analysis and at the same time flexible enough to allow addressing such integrated topics. The networking and the use of COST networking tools in WG 3 will support researchers to get acquainted with the latest developments in cross-sectoral climate impact studies and enable them to plan and carry out joint cross-sectoral analyses and project proposals.
